How an urgent capacity problem led to a strong collaboration

An organization that relies on the knowledge and skills of just one person is very vulnerable. When this employee becomes unavailable due to long-term illness or he or she simply switches to another employer, an ongoing project can come to an abrupt halt and a lot of information is lost. It happened to a Smart Asset Management Company, located in the southern part of the Netherlands.

The experienced Portuguese Front-end Developer Ivo Pereira joined on behalf of Jobbex to further delve into the project and to complete the product on time. It turned out to be a match made in heaven. That is why he likes to share his experiences with us.

Transparency first

“I became involved in conversations with our client and Jobbex when the need was very high. It is very difficult to find skilled IT professionals in the current labor market. Recruiters often have nice talks, but those promises often don't materialize. Still, I immediately had a good feeling about these two parties. The conversations we had were very transparent and honest. Both at Jobbex and at our client I feel that I can say what I think. I have not often experienced that in the past,” says Ivo.

After Ivo was hired, his biggest challenge was to fully master the existing code and to further complete the project within the existing deadline set by the customer. Ivo explains: “Our client was developing an application for a Dutch railway company, which should make it easier to schedule the periodic maintenance of trains. Previously, the client primarily relied on Excel files and SAP to make their capacity planning, which meant that a lot of work had to be done manually and many mistakes were made.”

More than just programming

The application that the customer had in mind was one of unprecedented complexity. There are many variables that need to be taken into account when calculating the ideal capacity planning. The maintenance must take place while the trains take part in the usual timetable simultaneously. In addition, there are several maintenance stations spread across the country and the work must be divided fairly among the available employees per station.

After a short training period, Ivo turned out to be the link pin between the end customer’s desires and his new colleagues in the client’s team. “Initially, we took a step back by clearly defining the user stories once again in collaboration with the Product Manager. Once that was clarified, I also occasionally took care of managing the work schedule, because there was a tight deadline for us to present a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). In addition to actually developing software solutions, I also guide the team in solving problems that arise during programming.”

With the right people and the right mindset on board, the final product was delivered well ahead of the original deadline. Where capacity planning for train maintenance used to be a tedious task, possible solutions can now be generated automatically with a few mouse clicks thanks to the new application. In addition, there is more insight into the process. The large amount of data that is stored in the system provides the Dutch railway company with a starting point for further optimizing its work processes.

A close partnership is born

By putting cooperation in the first place, Ivo strengthens the relationship between the client and Jobbex. “I try to proactively think along with our client, because ultimately that is also in the interest of Jobbex itself. I am now being involved by the client in making important choices when it comes to recruiting new staff for other assignments. I give sincere advice. If I have to choose between someone from Jobbex or someone from outside during a job interview, I will always go for quality and the person who I think best suits the assignment.”

According to Ivo, this transparency and integrity are central to the approach that makes Jobbex so successful: “Jobbex really listens to what the customer needs. This is not just about experience, but above all about a good match between client and candidate. At the same time, Jobbex also really listens to its employees. Ultimately, of course, they are also the people who can make a company successful. No bullshit, but clarity and sincerity. That makes Jobbex a great place to work.”
